What is Powder Coating?

PJ Powder Logo

Powder coating gives consumers, businesses, and industry one of the most economical, longest-lasting, and most color-durable quality finishes available. The powder coating process itself offers another advantage -- it is environmentally friendly...virtually pollution-free!

What is Powder Coating?

Powder Coating is a dry paint process that uses no solvents. Ground resins and polymers are electrostatically charged and applied to an electrically grounded metal part. Parts are then moved to a "curing" oven where the particles are melted and fused (crosslinking) forming a hardened surface. Much greater thicknesses can be achieved vs wet paints, our coatings normally range from 2-4 mils for a single coat. The resulting coating is harder and more durable than conventional paints adding greater value to your products. Powder coatings come in a few different chemistries and are offered in many different sheens, textures, special effects and 1000s of colors. Please see more detail on our Powders page or Contact Us to let us help you with your project requirements.

Benefits of Powder Coating

Since the Clean Air Act of 1970 (1970 CAA) many companies have sought a more environmentally friendly finish. Powder coating is considered a “Green Technology”, it does not require the use of solvents therefore the process releases little or no airborne VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Powder coatings are widely accepted and specified as the Best Available Control Technology (BACT) to reduce air pollution.

Powders, depending on chemical formulation, are resistant to UV light, moisture, chemicals and salt spray. This prolongs the life of your coating by reducing the risk of chipping, flaking, corrosion and fading. Because powder is applied as a dry film there is very little chance of running or sagging as with liquid coatings, while providing a much thicker coating. Also, because of the electrostatic nature of the coating process it is easier to achieve an even coat with full coverage. Powder coating greatly reduces part rejects due to finish issues!
